Discover an unexplored pristine ecosystem chartering with one of our crewed yachts

The Mergui Archipelago of Myanmar is extensive with over 800 jungle covered islands and is one of the most scenic places in the world to sail. Adventure sail through a vast cruising area, approximately 10,000 square miles, of virtually unexplored island coastlines, creeks and estuaries teeming with wildlife and rarely visited by travellers.

The islands are wonderful with pristine white beaches fringed by coral reefs and backed by hills covered in lush jungle. Sailing Excursions Asia charters two yachts that offer a unique opportunity for adventurous and open minded travellers who would clike to experience this remote and almost unspoiled ecosystem by sail.

Some islands feature rock pinnacles soaring 1000 metres and there are hidden lagoons only accessible through caves at low tide. Wander along deserted golden beaches or swim and snorkel in clear waters with fabulous coral. Exploration opportunities by dingy abound with miles of wild mangrove estuaries. Wildlife such as macaque monkeys, wild boar, gibbons, leopard and giant monitor lizards inhabit jungle interiors. The bird life is extensive and sea eagles and Brahminy kites are frequently observed gliding overhead. Dolphins come and ride our bow waves and sea otters are often seen close to island shores.

The islands of Mergui are not totally deserted as the Myanmar fishermen are to be seen plying the waterways.

They are cheerful people who love to meet visitors and are compulsive in offering their catch of the day as a gift.

There are sea gypsies here and there travelling between islands and occasionally building temporary dwellings amongst the trees on the waters edge. Pearl farm buoys dot some of the bays in the northern part of the archipelago along with a few small villages whose people very rarely have the chance to meet foreigners.

The villagers are enthusiastic in their welcome and although extremely poor, are generous and friendly. They are usually overwhelmed by our visits and will be full of curiosity but you will be treated with the greatest respect. Cultural visits to a village or sea gypsy community to experience a different way of life are included in our voyages. On these visits we encourage gifts to the communities of goods such as second hand clothes, magazines, pencils, chalk, paper and toys. This is an isolated remote area and you will not find modern conveniences such as internet facilities, mobile phone services, banks, credit card or atm machines and no, there is nowhere to develop film, buy suntan lotion or a bikini.
